The Bridges to Opportunity for Our Kids Institute (The BOOKs Institute) provides educational programming to PreK-12 children and youth residing in the Williamsburg-James City County.
Programming begins at the preschool level with the Preschool Readiness Education Program (PREP Academy). The program provides school readiness and wrap around services to families eligible for education subsidy. Students accepted into the PREP Academy are called Preppies. If accepted at the age of 3, the student remains in the program for 2 years. While students matriculate through the program, families are able to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Transformative Life Center.
Upon graduating to the public school system, Preppies also graduate to Youth Outreach University (Y. O. U.). Y. O. U. provides ongoing supplemental educational support to students in grades K-12th. This initiative provides guidance and resources to assist and prepare children and adolescents to be productive citizens.
Students in grades K-2nd, called Risers, and students in grades 3rd-5th, called Innovators, will be engaged in activities related to literacy, STEM, exercise, healthy eating, etc.. These activities are designed to provide students exposure to life lessons and experiences that compliment school lessons and principles of citizenship.
Students in 6th-8th grade are called Dreamers. Dreamers engage in online and face-to-face activities that allow them to begin thinking about careers, citizenship, community service, and post-secondary education preparation.
Students in 9th-12th grade are called Explorers. Explorers participate in online and face-to-face activities where they learn about careers, trades, and sharpening developmental skills. Explorers are engaged in workshops that assist them with understanding the steps to complete post-secondary education enrollment documents (e.g. FAFSA, college applications), obtaining citizenship documents (e.g. driver’s license, social security card, birth certificate, passport), registering to vote, professional development (resume building and creation), obtaining professional certifications, application completion for internships and part-time employment, and filing taxes.
The BOOKS Institute has been designed to extend levels of support for our communities’ youth from early childhood learning through graduation from high school. This will allow ACE to establish an uninterrupted relationship with students and families and allow the organization the ability to access the short and long term impacts of each program. BOOKS believes in allowing each young person to become their own success story and as they navigate through adolescence, in Youth Outreach University, they will end with PRIDE!
